In a single moment
I knew we were over.
As commitment smiled at us
And we were paralyzed
At the idea of entertaining future plans
Afraid to consider all the tough questions
Faith, Purpose, Parenthood
So we each closed doors
And shut down tomorrow.
You for the sake of today
Aggravated by any hint of losing the spontaneous
But when I looked in
I saw us as an unending adventure
New stories to be written
Parts of us retold
Our parents journey, not our own
And so I cheered from the sidelines
Until I felt hoarse
Imagining how we could make something beautiful of this
If only we would let go, when the tide came in
And let God remove the cynicism
Always dreaming of when
Believing in something worth building
A future worthy of tomorrow
A legacy of second chances
Hopes of minutes spent in going higher
Hours dissecting questions, finding answers
Days invested in more than me and you.
More years for us.
